"In retrospect, Carlo Maria Giulini has emerged as one of the half dozen or so greatest conductors or the recorded era. No better illustration of Giulini's stature can be offered than this magnificent performance of Beethoven's great "Eroica" Symphony. For me this is THE definitive performance of this symphony; majestic, noble and immensely satisfying -- both intellectually and emotionally. No other performance I've heard can compare with it. The performance of Schumann's Manfred Overture is also outstanding. This is a magnificent CD."

"Only Giulini made the LA Phil sound this good. To me, the tempo is perfect, and allows for a deep and full appreciation of Beethoven. I find that some other conductors tend to overdo the heavier aspects of Beethoven while Giulini's is a much more refined and flowing version. With the exception of his rendition of Mozart (too slow), anything by Giulini is recommended. He will always be revered in LA for his performances here"
Giulini in his late style--wise, slow, expressive

"If you want an ultra-dynamic or fervent reading of the Eroica, Giulini's 1979 version from Los Angeles won't satisfy--at 20 min., the first movement is considerably slower than the norm, even for the era before period style sped things up. But there's not a boring note here. Giulini imparts expressivity to this music in such a way that you believe in his viewpoint, which is romantic, inward and personal. The LA Phil, who adored him, are right in step, and DG's recording has a ful, warm bloom about it.
For its air of hushed awe, I can't think of another Eroica quite like this one. Soon Giulini's conducting would become so slow that he ws communicating basically with himself. I consider this to be late-period Giulini at its wisest even though he lived another 24 years. The Manfred Over., which is in the same style, comes from 1982 and was recorded digitally."
Giulini's Majestic Eroica Symphony

"Giulini's reading of Beethoven's 3rd "Eroica" Symphony is among the most idiosyncratic I've heard. It is still among the most satisfying. While it lacks the passion normally associated with it, it is replete with much lyricism and warmth. Giulini's tempi are the slowest I've heard, but these he uses to great effect, carefully molding phrases. Not once does his version sound like a lumbering, ponderous beast of a symphony; instead it sounds quite majestic. The Los Angeles Philharmonic's caliber of playing in this recording is certainly equal to any of the great orchestras of Europe. Once more, Deutsche Grammophon's image bit digital remastering yields a recording of exceptional sound quality."
