Synopsis

Album Description
Full Title - Laurie, Sabina & United Artists Sides Vol. 1. Hailing from the Bronx, The Belmonts took their name from the area's Belmont Avenue. With Dion they scored such hits as 'A Teenager In Love' (No 5) but this was a short relationship & after Dion went solo, they continued to gain hits with such songs as 'Tell Me Why' (No 18), 'Come On Little Angel' (No 28), 'Don't Get Around Much Anymore' (No 57) & the doo wop classic 'I Need Someone' (No 75). This CD features 30 tracks, not only sides made for Laurie & Sabina (many previously unissued) but also, for the first time ever, their complete United Artists recordings from 1964 (spread over this & its companion CD & including two previously unreleased tracks). The music tells both the story of a group that was a very important milestone in the era of doo wop music & also the birth of New York's white group sound. Ace. 1995.

CD Reviews

O.k. not great.

"within these 30 tracks are 6 of their 7 charted songs, but missing is 3 b-sides of the 6 charted songs between 1961 and 1963. and the a & b sides of the [7th] 1981 charted song with freddy cannon. also some of these tracks don't seem to be the ORIGINAL singles cut.[example "come on little angel' though it sounds close, there is some difference in the tonal expressions, and a little lack of crispness in their voices. it may be an earlier recording but its not EXACTLY the sound of the 45 single. [the "collectables" label set "the very best of the belmonts ,tell me why" are original recordings, and sound great] normally i like 'ace' better,--- and 'collectables' OFTEN drops the ball-- BUT, not this time!"

"I have been a fan of Dion and the Belmonts for over twenty years when I was five or six. I feel that the Belmonts are an underrated group and not given due credit. I really like all the songs on the album. The only problem I have with this CD compilation is that they include songs from Laurie, Sabina, and United Artists. But not Dot Records. The only songs I don't own by the Belmonts include the songs they recorded for Dot Records with the exception of "Have You Heard". Oh well, my search continues."
