CD Reviews

Turn your living room into a jazz club

"Here's a great great album full of infectious melodies and toe-tapping rhythms. Coleman and Webster were considered old-timers when they recorded this live session in 1967. Maybe so, but boy do they swing! Put this one in the CD player, dim the lights, pour a drink and you'll feel like you're in a great little jazz club."

"This album gets slighted for its retro-at-the-time (1967) style & its lack of adventure on the beat, but it does get your toes tappin' and your knees slappin' nonetheless. "Moonglow", "Pound Horn", "For Max", & "Bill Coleman" are tight with great solos from Ben, Bill, & the band. Bill's laid-back trumpet rivals "Sweets" Edison's pairing with Webster; however, I do wish that the entire CD had Ben & Bill equally paired. But the solo spots are not without merit, as Bill vocalizes & trumpet-izes nicely on "Satin Doll" & Ben shines on "For All We Know". Not a unified listen straight through, but one that I come back to often enough for its brighter moments."
