Hewas also an excellent trumpeter, he occasionally played clarinet and tenor and he was an influential & prolific arranger, a skilled composer whose songs included "Blues in the Night" and "When Lights Are Low," and a talented if under-publicized leader of big bands. Throughout his career he was always a professional, having fun with music but showing up on time, making deadlines and being very consistent in his work.
