The First Four Seasons

"Wow! You've got to have this Four Seasons if you are a collector of Vivaldi's music. This music was recorded in 1942 and is the first recording ever of the Four Seasons.

Even though the recording is old it has been restored so there are no pops, clicks or scratching sounds. It sounds very digital and clean for such an old recording.

The playing is actually not particularly impressive, but it is nice. Molinari does a good job conducting and the string orchestra plays very cleanly and expertly. An organ quietly accompanies the strings and, get this, the basso continuo is played by a piano that has been outfitted with a special device to make it sound like a harpsichord. And it actually does sound like a harpsichord.

Supposedly this music was recorded as part of a Vivaldi resurrection in Italy whose aim was to glorify Italian music. Vivaldi, a forgotten composer, benefited from research designed to rediscover Italian greats.

This wartime Vivaldi performance is certainly historical and needs to be on any serious Vivaldi collector's shelf."
