The sound is excellent: the technique of recording from old 78rpm records has been mastered by the French at Chronological Classics. These tracks were made by Bessie for Columbia, and Columbia has re-issued them on several compact discs; however, the Chronological Classics SOUND better. Why? For one thing, they aptly adjust the revolutions per minute so that the records don't play too fast. And then, of course, they edit out most of the surface noise while enhancing the insturmentals and vocals. . Most of the tracks featured on this disc are lesser-known, but each is a little gem of early 20th Century American culture. Some of these tracks approach the art-song genre of the German lied or French mélodie of turn-of-the-century Europe. ." |
