Along with friends Big Bill Broonzy and Tampa Red, Big Maceo Meriweather was a central figure in creating what was to become known as "the Chicago Blues". This recording is the first of two volumes covering Big Maceo's entire recorded output. Included are extensive, illustrated liner notes based on interviews Document Records conducted with Big Maceo's daughter and nephew. Big Maceo suffered a stroke in 1946. For his later recordings, he was no longer able to play the piano, but still maintained his strong singing voice (as listeners will find on Volume 2). Big Maceo was one of the finest, most influential recorded blues piano musicians. First-class sound restoration using the original 78 rpm records.
