"Big Maybelle was a true original, she was an inspiration for both Aretha Franklin and Janis Joplin, two of the greatest female blues singers ever, and she holds her own. In fact, there are two songs here that Aretha recorded later on, "SXo LOng" (2 versions) and "Ramblin", which, I bleieve are on Aretha's "Soul 69" album (and if you don't have that one, run out and get it TODAY)"

"Big Maybelle had a blistering delivery- matched by no one then or now. A must for any 1950s rhythm and blues fan, she could belt it out and tear it up and yet be sensitive. Check out her only film appearance in "Jazz on a Summer's Day" 1958 Newport Jazz festival. A shame no live recording was ever waxed. A truly unique performer whose life was tragically cut short, passing away in the early 1970s. "Pitiful" is one of my faves."
She is as good as it gets . . .

"My favorites are "A Good Man is Hard to Find" and "How It Lies". Makes you feel like the guy is gonna be in real trouble once they run into Big Maybelle :) She is fabulous."
