CD Reviews

A disc to be avoided by fans of Django
Peppino | 08/28/1999
(1 out of 5 stars)

"This disc is a trivialisation of the music that Django and other contemporaries strived to articulate with such talent. This is no comparison to "Roots to Django" also by Bireli Lagrene. The latter is a work of love and respect while 'My favorite Django" is at best "lift music"... Django fans stay away"
Not vintage Birčli, but a nice item

"This

music owes to modern, electric treatments of Django classics, and the

influence is definitely "Weather Report" & Jaco

Pastorious " . It is not typical of most of the Bireli catalogue, save for 2 ill fated Blue Note recordings, currently unavaliable. Bireli is real big for Jaco, and has previously

recorded a lovely version of "3 Views of A Secret". Yes, at

times, this cd has a "pop" feel, but for Bireli's brilliant

solo on "Moppin' the Bride" alone, this warrants the cds

purchase, especially if you play guitar. 5 stars if you are guitarist,

1 star if you are a " Jazz purist" , and 3 stars in

general. The arrangements are a bit slick, but the guitar solos are

"out of this world" !"
No, no, no, noooooo my friends!

"Nooooooooooooooooooo my friends, you're going wrong here! This cd is fantastic nothing less. It is an incredibly well played collection of Django reinterpretations with honesty and respect by Bireli. The fact that electronic arrangements are involved doesn't mean that this cd is bad or that it should be forgotten. Bireli's playing here is exceptional as it has always been .. consider that he plays here songs that he knows really well so he really plays with ease and comfort .... Solos are magnificient and the electric, "Weather Report" type of feel is a great idea, a great contribution to Django's music which surely it is eternal but it needs a little of modern taste ... at least sometimes and expecially if the treatment is done as well as it is done here by the very talented and inspired Bireli..
I really love this cd and I think it is almost perfect.."
