Amazon.comThere's a sad irony in the title of Bishop Paul Morton's Let It Rain: Expanded Edition release, as this dynamic pastor lost the bulk of his main church building in New Orleans due to Hurricane Katrina. Yet this is a man and a church full of faith as evidenced through the passion that prevails on this enhanced release (originally out in 2003). Who else would sandwich the title track with rousing praise-fests like "High Praise" and "God Is a Good God"? From start to finish, Morton is backed by a top-notch roster of musicians like guitarist Jonathan Dubose and bassist Andrew Gouche, as well as the loud and proud Full Gospel Baptist Church Fellowship Mass Choir. Guest vocal spots by Desmond Phillips ("High Praise") and Margaret Bell ("Because of Who You Are") add variety to Morton's more traditional styling. And speaking of style, the 10 tracks on the CD range from more conventional ("Walk On By Faith" and "The Just Shall Live") to more contemporary gospel (Lauryn Hill's "On That Day" and "I Need Thee" arranged by BeBe Winans). Of course, the DVD captures some of boundless passion that filled Greater St. Stephens Missionary Baptist Church in NOLA on that special night. The prevailing attitude is one of a tested faith; little could Morton and his fellow believers know what was to befall them. But most assuredly, that faith has carried them through as it does on this passionate release that calls for God's dominion in the face of daily struggles. Seldom has it been captured in gospel music so well. --Michael Lyttle
