"Colin Vearncombe is back with his old moniker, Black. This is his first new album as Black since 1993's "Are We Having Fun Yet?" He did a solo album in 1999 called "The Accused" which was okay. The same can be said of "Between Two Churches". It's more stripped down and acoustic than his previous work. It does not supersede his early work such as "Wonderful Life", "Comedy", or "Black". I think the best song on the album is "Cold Chicken Skin". The rest of the album is mid-tempo. There are some darker moments like "Two Churches", and there are other fairly decent tracks like "Teenage Wall", "In A Heartbeat", "A Signal Black Spot" and "The History Of Rock and Roll". He references his most famous hit, "Wonderful Life" in "Are You Having A Wonderful Life?"



There is something likeable about "Between Two Churches", and if you liked Black's other work, you would probably like this one. It just seemed average, thus the three stars. I'd like to see Colin utilize a more lush approach as he did in his earlier years. He was comparable to Roxy Music/Bryan Ferry back then. If you are new to Black, I would start with his debut, "Wonderful Life" and progress up to "Between Two Churches"."

As Good As It Should Be

"First thing first,It is certain that Colin Vearncombe (aka Black) is one of the most talented songwriters and composers of last three decades. If our gauge will be his hit song Wonderful Life or high-tempo fiery Everything Coming Up Roses, won't we be neglecting his most important talent source, melancholic romantic sensitive dark side, which in fact covers his all albums and can even be smelt at those two songs? If we will do so, where will we put the pieces of beauty like Ave Lolita, Change Your Mind, Yves Klein Blue or Storm Cold Catherine and what about Small Pieces? a master craft from the master itself.



If it is our expectations is that we will get another Wonderful Life or any other album which is pop, which we can compare with the albums of George Michael, it is certain that we have never listened Black in the right way, or never listened except the hits, anyway. And about the album, it is so beautiful. Take Charlemagne, take Teenage Wall, take Same Mistake Twice or Signal Black Spot and listen it till the end listen how he plays with the guitar, listen how he lets feelings flow with the song. And leave it behind,take any pop album from the famous top 100 list which is projected to our minds and hearts. Uups what happened is it a song or a well produced packaged freak hits your ear,hits your head.



Finally it is certainly a shame that such a talent is now so underrated.
