Synopsis

Similar in concept to the rest of the Blue on Blues series, this edition pairs two of the genre's founding fathers. Charley Patton, of course, is as close as one can come to the source of Delta blues, while Blind Lemon Jefferson is one of those principally responsible for the music's Texas permutation. Once again, little else serves to explain the pairing, and the musical selections themselves--Patton's "Mississippi Boweevil Blues" and "A Spoonful Blues," for instance, or Jefferson's "See That My Grave's Kept Clean"--are hardly surprising. Still, placing the two side by side like this may serve to highlight the fact that even in the early years of the blues, there was plenty of variety to be heard. It's also a good introduction for newcomers to the country blues genre, who may have trouble getting their ears around it. --Genevieve Williams

CD Reviews

If you decide you don't need the more complete sets . . .

"If you don't need the more complete collections by either artist, of which there are several selections ranging from single disk to boxed sets, then this is more than decent. Honestly, I only selected it because I found it significantly marked down in a used bin. Otherwise, I would have preferred a more complete collection by both Patton and Jefferson. That said, the sound quality is about as good as possible with these old recordings and you get a pretty decent taste for each artist. The liner notes are very excellent and the CD makes for a good listen. Now that I have it, I'm not positive I really NEED more than this. That's not to criticize the artists; but merely to point out this taste of them goes a long way."

"When you think of the forces that shaped blues, these guys should pop into your head. Both Patton and Jefferson, whose recording careers were very short, had a lasting effect on the development of the blues. This is an awesome collection of some very influential music. The remastering of this record is well done as well. I love this record and recommend it to anyone who appreciates music."
