Synopsis
Amazon.com essential recording No act better epitomizes alternative country than Blue Mountain. This trio from the woods of northern Mississippi is a rock band with twang to spare. The title comes not from a dumb pot joke but from a sense that these tracks sprang from the musicians' backyard. "Homegrown" opens with "Bloody 98," an uptempo blues shuffle that finds singer-guitarist Cary Hudson describing the state highway between Mobile, Alabama, and Hattiesburg, Mississippi, in a nasal moan straight out of Bob Dylan's "Maggie's Farm." Counterbalancing that song is "Babe," one of the most convincing rock & roll odes to marriage ever. The album also contains Hudson's most pointedly political song yet, "Generic America," a galloping folk rock anthem that takes a broad swipe at "shopping malls and prison walls." --Geoffrey Himes Similarly Requested CDs

CD ReviewsHome Run!! mistersipi | Nashville, TN USA | 09/21/2000 (5 out of 5 stars) ""Homegrown" is a worthy follow-up to Blue Mountain's debut disc, "Dog Days". This Mississippi based band continues to outshine all the other so-called alt. country or roots rock acts simply on the strength of their songwriting and the ability to transport the listener into their "ever so real" world. This act continues to evolve and this effort is definately not "Generic America"." Bluegrass & Southern Fried Salad with Heavy Metal Dressing 09/23/1999 (5 out of 5 stars) "Listen to this CD on a clear crisp autumn night on your back porch, kickback and have a few homebrews, every song on this album should give you goosebumps and make you wish you had a girlfriend with two first names just like Myrna Lee."
