"The third in what was a trilogy of gospel albums, Bob Dylan again utilizes his faith to deliver powerful messages that continue to have remarkable meaning.
The joyous Heart of Mine and Property of Jesus capture the warmth in the soul, while Trouble and Dead Man, Dead Man depict the bitter wilderness. The title cut and Every Grain of Sand are essential tracks in any Dylan discography.
The August 1981 release features an all-star lineup that includes Duck Dunn (b), Tim Drummond (b), Fred Tackett (g), Ronnie Wood (g), Jim Keltner (d), Ringo Starr (d) and Benmont Tench (k).
It remains an overlooked classic by those who dismiss the message and the messenger for all the wrong reasons."
Shot of Dylan

"After listening to Dylan' 2nd Gospel album "Saved" I hoped for better. Don't get me wrong i did not dislike "saved" ,But it is probably the least satisfying Dylan album. Shot of love follows suit completing the Dylan gospel trilogy, Except Dylan sounds like he is falling back to old habits.(that is a very good thing) This album is still very heavily influenced with religion, but you feel that satisfaction of a good Dylan album when its finished. A must have as with any Dylan album."
Dylan is an artist

"Bob Dylan created three Christian music CDs, "Shot of Love" being one. Many mainstream Christian music artists create repetitive, empty, plastic music. Many listeners of Christian music (whether in church or from commercial sources) apparently have low expectations. Dylan rises about that complacency and puts his heart, mind and soul into producing good quality music that also reflects Biblical values. Although "Shot of Love" is not at the same par as "Long Train Coming" and maybe not quite as good as "Saved", it's still a great CD."
Sloppy, but not as bad as thought when released

"When "Shot of Love" was released, it was almost universally declared a disaster. Time has been kind to Dylan's three "gospel" albums as unique and amazing detours in a career filled with them; however, that doesn't take away the fact that the album feels sloppy, rushed and without much cohesion. Several songs sound like first or second takes that could have been far, far better with some work on them to tighten them up, most notably "Heart of Mine". The best songs are the non-religous ones, including the amazing "Every Grain of Sand", "In the Summertime" and of course "The Grooms Still Waiting at the Altar", which was added onto the album years later after only being available as a b-side of a 45. Actually, it's a mystery why Dylan left this and "Carribean Wind" (which sounds like it had many takes and some overdubs) off the album; it would have had a much better reception than the mawkish "Lenny Bruce" or the sluggish "Dead Man, Dead Man"."
