Synopsis

Ugly Americans may be on the wane, but various survivors of the Austin alt-pop outfit do turn out to support frontman Bob Schneider on this solo effort. Lonelyland showcases Schneider's competing interests as a singer-songwriter (nice Elvis Costello-like melodic turns of "Big Blue Sea") and Southern white-boy rapper (most notably on the swampy "Bullets"). But things get really strange on "The World Exploded into Love," on which a sub-Barenaked Ladies spiel is paired with full-blown female operatic accompaniment. Schneider, it turns out, is the son of an opera singer, so the song makes sense biographically, if not musically. While fans of Schneider's prior outfits (Joe Rockhead, Ugly Americans, and the Scabs) will likely find things to love on this album, Lonelyland sounds like the work of a solo artist who's still finding his own voice. --Bill Forman

"Bob Schneider was named Musician of the Year during the 20TH annual Austin Music Awards last week. The awards took place at Austin's Town Hall and served to kick off the week-long South By Southwest Music & Media Conference (SXSW), the music industry's most prestigious gathering.Schneider, whose debut album Lonelyland was released on March 13 to critical acclaim, swept the coveted Awards ceremony for the second year in a row, accruing wins in ten top categories - the most ever won by a single artist in the 20 year history of the event. In addition to Musician of the Year, Schneider won awards for:Album of the Year (Lonelyland) Best Singer-Songwriter Best Male Vocalist Best Songwriter Best Funk Band (The Scabs) Best Concert Poster (The Scabs, Antone's by Bob Schneider) Best Cover Art (Lonelyland) Best Keyboard Player (David Boyle, The Scabs) Best Horn Players (Grooveline Horns, The Scabs)A consummate performer and songwriter, Schneider has long been a fixture on the burgeoning Austin music scene. Originally self-releasing Lonelyland last year, the CD quickly climbed the Texas music charts, even outselling first-week releases from Limp Bizkit, The Wallflowers, Eminem, and Lyle Lovett. On the strength of Lonelyland and his many SRO live shows, Schneider kicked off SXSW 2000 with a sweep of the Austin Music Awards, taking home trophies for Musician Of The Year, Band Of The Year, Best Male Vocals, Songwriter Of The Year, and Best Funk Band.I've been going to Lonleyland shows weekly for over a year now. I would HIGHLY reccommend this album to anyone who loves great music, and great song-writing. From the first track on, you're in for a treat.A must have in your CD collection."
Few artists can deliver such diversity with quality results.

"Bob Schneider's major label debut, Lonelyland, is difficult to categorize. A little roots rock, a good dose of blues, some funk and soul, a singer-songwriter bent... Think G. Love, Jude and John Wesley Harding... Or just follow the "music" link on Schneider's web site and spin samples of each song. Listen to the catchy pop of Metal and Steel, the Philly-soul of Big Blue Sea, the grunge rock of Jingy, the funk of Bullets, the atmospheric rock of The World Exploded in Love... you get the idea. This guy does it all, and he does it all well."

"Stumbled upon Bob's music recently and was astounded by the quality and diversity. Lonelyland is one fine CD and it is played constantly. Do yourself a favor and track down the "Texas" version with three bonus tracks. The over 10 minute "King Of The World" is absolutely amazing (and available to download at his web site for a nominal charge). Other favorites on the CD are Tokyo and Oklahoma, and the atmospheric "Grave of Senior Corizo" (bonus). You can't go wrong with this CD and will be following up with other Bob music. Particularly good are the CDs "Songs Sung and Played On Guitar At The Same Time", and "Underneath The Onion Trees" with rock/jazz guitarist Mitch Watkins."
