"bob thompson is a very talented and mature jazz pianist not terribly well known outside west virginia in spite of his travels and radio work on Mountain Stage. This album focusses on traditional tunes he heard and sang in church choir. he and his fine accompanying musicians gently address well known tunes such as "study war no more", "swing low , sweet chariot" with great melodic originality. his arrangements avoid gospel cliches and tickle the modern ear without obscuring the depth and richness of these and other hymns. this disc is an excellent introduction to modern jazz piano for newbies and will have grizzled old fans wondering where mr thompson has been."
