"Patterns is a bit more mellow than my other favorite album by Bobby Hutcherson, Stick-Up! This is probably due to Joe Chambers writing and playing. Chambers contributes several mellow tunes (including Patterns which eerily sounds like My Favorite Things to me) and plays softer than Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, or Billy Higgins. His playing here is on par with his contribution to Wayne Shorter's Etcetera... another fantastic (and lesser known) album. The rest of the band is top notch, including James Spaulding's alto sax and flute work and of course Bobby Hutcherson on vibes... great album... pick it up before it disappears..."
Great album, mixed up song listing

"A great album all around, Effi is one of my all time favorites. A mellow, straight ahead album from BH at a time when many of his albums were more experimental. Note that the track listings were mixed up though, side 1 is actually side 2 and vice versa. A quick listening of the two different versions of Patterns will confirm this, the one that is listed as the original take of Patterns is actually Effi."
