"For their 1998 album Rebel Soul, Bonfire took a decidedly Southern approach. That's not to say they became the Allman Brothers overnight. The band still delivers their signature brand of melodic hard rock; it just has a noticeable Southern flavor to it. I'm not really sure why a German rock band is serenading the American South, but the experiment seems to work, especially in helping Rebel Soul stand out a bit from the rest of Bonfire's back catalog. It may not rock as hard as Fireworks, but the more laid-back approach on this album works well with the band's ultra-melodic songwriting style. Bonfire's cover of Dixie may leave you scratching your head (or thinking "dudes, you're from Germany, not Alabama!"), but their cover of the Cat Stevens classic the First Cut is the Deepest was nicely done.
Overall, I was very pleased with Rebel Soul. It may not be the typical Bonfire album, but fans should know by now that the band rarely disappoints.
