Synopsis

Arguably the last "good" BDP album before KRS-One took a slight misstep with Sex and Violence (and then had to reinvent himself on Return of the Boom Bap), Edutainment was a classic blend of puffed-chest bravado mixed with socially conscious missives. This multifaceted scope is best reflected in the album's three best-known songs: "Love's Gonna Getcha," an antimaterialist, anticrime narrative; "Ya Know the Rules," a furious rhyme pelting; and "Beef," where KRS lays into the meat industry. Keeping the beats strictly b-boy are producers KRS, Kenny Parker, and others. Even if you're not a BDP completist, this album deserves to be in your collection. --Oliver Wang

CD Reviews

"It's not a perm, it's a temporary"

"Straightened hair may be temporary, but KRS-One's influence on Hiphop is permanent. And this CD is just one of the reasons why. The beats and music are slammin' and the lyrics are boombastic-fantastic. It gets better and better everytime I spin it. I've heard it said that KRS is too political, or too "conscious", or all about his philosophy, but how is that even a complaint? I like music that rocks me, or makes me want to dance, or drops the funky beatdown like James Brown with a badge, but that is merely the minimum requirement. It has to do all that AND make me think, otherwise, why bother? If I wanted music to go braindead to, I'd just tune into top 40 radio and put my head under a truck tire. If you want more from your music than something to eat up your time while the world floats past you, BUY THIS ALBUM, then check out the rest of KRS's incredible catalog. Peace."

"Dear Amazon,

This is a rare find. Not only was it not popular when released, it was all but buried. I am happy to say that with only a few clicks it became mine. Satisfied is what I am."

"When I first bought this tape cassette (yes tape cassette lol) back in 1990 I was hooked from the intro "Exhibit A." PE influenced me to be Black n proud but KRS influenced me to be more aware & educated. KRS made being intelligent the coolest thing on the planet. His previous masterpieces were great but Edutainment did it for me. Everything that's wrong in the world & in hip hop today KRS addressed it in this hip hop gem 20 years ago. "House N*****" is so on point & relavent today it isn't even funny. KRS rips it by saying, "...not to mention/The award shows for pimps & h***/And every other hypocrite that flaunt their clothes/KRS knows, so he just grows/Always saying something different from the average Joes/So you can front & rock the biggest chain/But it doesn't write albums I believe it is the brain!" All too true in todays so called hip hop. Illmatic, Paid In Full, Takes A Nation..., All For One etc. are indeed classics, but Edutainment could easily trump those albums as the best of all time. KRS is definitely the Teacher, the Blastmaster & the Emcee."
