CD ReviewsA strange trip Karl Haikara | Denver, Co. | 05/31/2004 (4 out of 5 stars) "I got this on vinyl because it looked interesting. Listening to it one is touched by the complexity of the words and music, it's almost biblical in immensity. However, it is marred by the vocals, which are typical death metal type bile screams. It is sort of effective, but one wishes the vocals were a little less freaky, and more normal, to give the lyrics their due.
But the vocals are part of the presentation, and they work fairly well in a way. This is a good record to bridge the work of emo, metal and post-rock, it sort of revels in each genre, the sounds of metal (mostly Emperor type melodic black metal, which I happen to like) and some emo (the Thursday kind, which I also like) and the usual ideas behind a great deal of post-rock, like Godspeed you Black Emperor, and the musical portion is similar to the primarily instrumental Explosions in the sky!. I like this alot for a record I got for 4 bucks, it's a very well done record, and it's a shame that a band this good is not more well known. Maybe they'll get their due sometime, as a bridger of metal and post-rock. For both indie kids and metal fans." |
