"Totally OUTSTANDING!! Somewhat of a different pace then his earlier albums. Had Warner Bros marketed this gem the way they should have, this would have been Bootsy's BEST selling album!! How could "F-Encounter" not make the top 40 on the R&B charts?? The hypnotic "Mug Push" what a great beggining and the funk gets stronger!! "It's A Musical" should have lit up the dance floors but my favorite "Sound Crack" sounded like new wave meets funk. This is most certainly my favorite cd from BOOTSY"

"This is a CD I already reviewed,but it's not this edition I own.In 1996 'Ultra Wave' was reissued by Warner Bros. Ol' School Music division and is one of a few albums in that series that went out of print and THAT is the edition I own.For those newcomers to this album I am including my review of that edition here as well so you'll know what you'll be getting when you purchase this.Well,I must say that Bootsy Collins's solo albums of the 70's tended to be longwinded affairs so intent on the right groove they meander too often.But on 1980's 'Ultra Wave' Bootsy gets on the one and STAYS THERE and on every single cut he never slips off into indulgant mandess.I imagine that may be why some P-Funk fans detest this album so-because they only enjoy that madness and may not really know how to funk.So unless your into P-funk for all the wrong reasons then 'Ultra Wave',like all Bootsy albums is THE BOMB!!!! "Mug Push" is the only song here available on Bootsy's best of collection and is basic midtempo P-funk.But let Bootsy up the tempo and this CD COOKS-"F-Encounter","It's A Musical","Fat Cat" and "Sound Crack" are all pounding,rhythmic FONK of mammoth preportions,only with no shameless sloganeering.They're lean,grooving and almost tuneful.The two songs that stand out in my mind though are the roadhouse P-funk comic shuffle of "Is That My Song?",a wry,comic self anylysation on Bootsy's own change in style."Sacred Flower" is yet more affecting midtempo funk-leaving 'Ultra Wave' groovalistic,highly booty shaking without a ballad in the bunch.Personally I prefer this era in Bootsy Collins's career,circa 1980-1982 because the bassist finally located his place within the one and worked it to death rather then make alot of noise trying to look freaky.This CD sees Bootsy having become himself with his most fully coherant album yet-still funky beyond reason but more listenable.His 1982 follow up album The One Giveth, the Count Taketh Away (also available on the same label this reissue is) takes that idea even further and aside from being available on CD is a highly worthy companion piece to this album if you want both.But each has their own special qualities and I'm not about to fault this album for coming as close to pure,funky perfection as anyone could as for."
