Synopsis

Product Description
Barry Lynn returns for album number two on Mu. Continuing his hugely successful trademark dubstep/electronica sound from the 2006 album 'Oneiric', Lynn ups the ante and 'Glyphic' certainly delivers. From the opening title track, Boxcutter's totally unique sound excels. Floating pads and astral jazz samples sit above deep dub basses, with all manner of instruments thrown into the mix, resulting in a beautiful noise throughout. He pursues dubstep with 'Bug Octet' and the dub inflected 'J Dub', and break orientated electronica with 'Kaleid' and 'Fieldtrip'. With the outstanding 'Foxy' he blends deep bass, soulful organ and vocals with soaring pads and an infectious 2-Step Garage skippy break.

Boxcutter is an artist who pushes the dubstep sound to a new level while keeping the dub roots of the music firmly intact, injecting a truly unique flavour to everything he produces. Another huge album from Northern Ireland's biggest and best Dubstep producer.

CD Reviews

Some good cuts.

"A couple of the better cuts were already released on comps. I think the mix or mastering on Glyphic is better but I already own the cuts. so.. its hard to get too excited.

there are a few questionable cuts on this one. a reggae sounding effor that doesnt do much for me and a couple traditional IDM cuts that remind me of stuff from the mid 90s. blah.

The opening track is awesome and there are a couple good cuts after that. but I had really high hopes for this CD. Boxcutters first album was probly my fav from last year."

"With the music community intensely micro focused on dubstep, it seems that everyone except me has thrown up Burial on the pedestal of their 2007 charts. Glyphic, however, tends to careen away from the mundane dark moods and breathes fresh elements into a spotlight style. The experience in production and techniques behind the album clearly shows Barry Lynn's artistry as he incorporates complex jazzy grooves, deep rumbling (and properly EQed) bass, and the detailed dubbed out breaks, with every track on an album offering a unique experience. Producing from Northern Ireland's Lurgan, this is Lynn's second LP on Planet Mu, which immediately falls into my category of intelligent listening music [hmm... perhaps this is my queue to trademark a new acronym]. Lynn is one of the artists who will propel the development of the genre, continuously exploring innovative approaches and push the envelope of its evolution well after the others have exhausted the winning formula. Watch this one. Favorite tracks: Foxy and Fieldtrip."
