Fine performance, poor sound

"Walter Klien was a superb interpreter of the classic piano repertoire. His recordings of the Mozart and Schubert sonatas (currently available on VoxBox) are favorites of mine: the performances are beautifully played, straightforward, unpretentious, qualities hard to find in piano performances of these composers' works. His performance of the late Brahms piano works on this disk are similarly well-played, and I'm sure I would be giving five stars were it not for the very poor sound quality. The notes say these pieces were recorded in 1969. This would put them after the Mozart sonatas (recorded in 1964), but the Mozart have much better sound. This Brahms disk has a muffled piano sound with very limited dynamic range."
