Synopsis

Album Description
The Portland band responsible for the single "Elliott Smith's Guitar" releases a full-length of the same name -- an eclectic assortment of indie pop, dark improvisations, and melancholic melodies. Brainwarmer's debut CD features the unique sounds of theremin, Optigan, and modified Speak & Spell, with some experimental touches and ethereal howls thrown in for good measure. Female vocals, guitars, percussion, keyboards, synths, and found noise round out the mix.

CD Reviews

Strange and lovely
05/10/2002
(4 out of 5 stars)

"Have you ever listened to an independent, listener-supported community radio station, late late at night, when they let the freaks have shows? And the freaks always have excellent taste in music and play the most obscure little gems, with seemingly no concept of continuity? So you'll hear a silly pop song followed by an ambient/experimental piece, followed by a country tune? That's what this cd is like: really cool tunes thrown together in a way that's delightfully wrong. This is a great cd to have in the car for when you're driving between urban centers at 3 a.m., and you can't stand listening to talk radio any more."
Astonishing/scary

"The dark past of these folks is enough to scare anyone. I know I don't have to tell any of you about their unsavory hijinks! The record is an amazing relic of their lucid moments, though. Swirling solid masses of noise are punctured by blunt slabs of lyrical wonder. Elliot Smith's Guitar is only a scratch on the surface. Tiffany Lee Brown may be the next Patti Smith, or not.Buy an extra copy for Mom."
