Brent's solid solo debut from 1990

"Not quite as strong as the sole Bourgeois-Tagg 1987 effort, "Yo-Yo", this is still a solid collection of well-crafted tunes. Brent's now with a Christian label and many of the songs here seem to have a spiritual or moral theme, yet the religious references are subtle enough in the lyrics that the music can be enjoyed non-denominationally. While "Compromise" does seem to directly address the reasons for his break-up with Larry Tagg, "Dare To Fall in Love" works well enough as a straight pop-song to have garnered mainstream airplay, though some of the figurative references could've been inspired by religious symbolism. Nevertheless, Brent still has the knack for crafting a tune around strong lyrical and musical hooks, and "Shit Out Of Luck" confirms he hasn't completely shucked his cynical sense of humor for blind faith. In addition to Brent's vocals and keyboards, Danny Kortchmar, who also produced, handles most of the guitars, Randy Jackson is on bass, Steve Jordan plays drums, Vicki Randle adds percussion and backing vocals, and a mysterious 'Fo is credited on Wa-wa and guitar. "Can't Feel the Pain" was co-written with former bandmate Lyle Workman, who also plays guitar on that track, with Christine Mcvie contributing the backing vocal. Rick Vito shows up on "Wild Child" on dobro. Highlights also include a crisp and effective re-working of Rod Argent's "Time of the Season"."

Excellent album from 1990! Still remember it.

"Brent Bourgeois may have moved on to Christian music, but I liked his former rock sound of his 1990 debut. He had lots of attitude and just tore it up on many of the songs! I still like the dramatic Dare to Fall in Love, which only peaked to No. 33 in 1990 on the Billboard Hot 100. It's one of the best written albums of the just young '90s and he even had Don Henley's producer Danny Kortchmar to produce his album. While Brent has moved on to a more higher place now, this is still a strong album that most of his current fans should check out."

"This album is great, and deep in its quality -- one of those few albums you can listen from top to bottom and not hit the "Next Track" button. Great grooves, witty lyrics, and Brent's vocal range and quality are perfect.



Like many, I was sad to see him transition to only Christian music, but this lone solo album stands alone. If you can find it used, grab it up!"
