"I'm A Slave 4 U was Britney's first single from her highly-anticipated third album titled simply Britney. The song was premiered at MTV's Video Music Awards 2001 on September 6th. A tidal wave of controversy had swarmed prior to the event when news leaked out that Britney would be dancing on stage with real animals such as snakes, tigers etc. The show went ahead and Britney danced with those animals - not nominated for any awards, she stole the show with the performance of I'm A Slave 4 U. I must admit, the prospect of hearing Britney move into a more grown-up territory with the advent of R'n'B songs was an interesting thought for me - and I'm sure all Britney's other fans around the world. At first listen, I thought I'm A Slave 4 U was a good song - not her best, but not a total disaster. Over time - after taping the MTV performance - I began to love the song after watching it again and again and again...trying to learn those moves on the breakdown! The song begins off with Britney singing, "I know I may be young, but...I've got feelings too. And I need to do, what I feel like doing - so let me go...and just listen." Declaring her maturity and increasing independence, Britney makes an overall successful crossover from Teen Pop Queen to Seductive R'n'B Mistress. This said, however, it is rather unusual for a hugely successful artist known for the pop genre to act out this transition when on only their third album. Needless to say, Britney felt this is what needed to be done - so she did it and it was a smooth crossover. I'm A Slave 4 U peaked at No.4 in the UK and was a huge No.1 in many European territories. The album Britney was also another success shifting 15 million copies and topping the charts in the USA - it was Britney's third consecutive US No.1 album...she then became the first ever female artist in history to have her first three records debut at No.1. Working with the super-cool Neptunes (masters of R'n'B/Hip-Hop), Britney ensured that she came up with a song that was very cool and downright sexy. Britney lost a lot of her teenage fans, but in her place were a new, more mature audience of 20-something adults...interested in the music, not the image. Surely this is more rewarding at the end of the day.The video to I'm A Slave 4 U assured that Britney was now a woman. Face licking, panting and groaning were all highlighted topics in the video that obvious caused controversy. The beat on I'm A Slave 4 U sound very tropical and jungley, and is arranged in the most effective and catchy way. There is also a six-note beat in the background that is created to sound like steam being released from a pipe as Britney sweats around in the video, along with a shimmering beat towards the end. Along with I'm A Slave 4 U, you also get the Instrumental of the song, which allows you to fully appreciate all the musical wonders of the song in question. There is also another bonus track, Intimidated, which is a superb Rodney Jerkins produced R'n'B song deemed not good enough for the Britney album. All in all, I'm A Slave 4 U is my all-time favourite Britney song because it's just so mature, funky, wild, sexy and downright dirty - buy it now from Amazon.com!"
