CD review: Broken Boundaries

(5 out of 5 stars)
"Broken Boundaries explores original and arranged works by well-known composers from the Baroque era to the 20th cnetury. Throughout all selections Schattschneider's playing is very expressive and the ensemble with accompanists Barbara Young and John Piirainen is impeccable. Most impressive, however, is the rich and focused tone quality demonstrated by Schattschneider throughout all works featured on the CD."

"Adam Schattschneider's new CD Broken Boundaries is an unusual compilation of arrangements and original compositions ranging from Baroque to contemporary literature. Thoroughly professional, well recorded and exquisitely performed it is a delight to listen to from beginning to end. There are many more good things to say than can be listed here. The Adagio movement of the Marcello is especially effective. Schattschneider's playing is thoughtful and his tone is always beautiful. Debussy's Rhapsody is completely captivating on the part of both performers. Ralph Hermann's arrangement of Gershwin's Medley from Porgy and Bess is filled with expressive beauty and gorgeous tone. Bonneau's virtuosic and idiomatic Caprice lives up to its name with an interpretation that captures spirit and interest in an engaging way. The 12 tone Elegie by Jindrich Feld is an expressive and well organized piece of music. The recording is excellent and as one of the most convincing performances on the CD this may be my favorite track. Closing the CD is Dubois' Dix Figures a Danser. This piece is an unusual, extremely varied and interesting piece of music consisting of 10 delightful and short musical vignettes. Each has its own character and mood. The performers aptly capture the moods of each of the pieces very effectively. The variety and energy of the musical styles presented here combined with wonderful performances on the part of all performers will most certainly make this an excellent addition to anyone's library."
