CD Reviews

By far best Bruckner recording ever! no exaggeration
Barry E. Schwartz | Boulder, CO USA | 09/23/2006
(5 out of 5 stars)

"When you think of wine think France, when you think of an orchestra think Chicago! The CSO (Chicago Symphony Orchestra) playing (especially the brass!) is unbelievable- this recording will knock your socks off and send chills through you! If you aren't hooked on the Chicago Symphony already, this recording will easily do it! There is no better Bruckner conductor than Barenboim and hopefully all of his Bruckner recordings of the 70s with the CSO will be available soon - hint hint!

This will tell you all you need to know about this recording: It now has been released 4 times! Standing the test of time, this recording, assuming it is another re-release of the 1973 DGG recording, reappeared on vinyl about 1980 (I can't find mine) and then was re-released again as part of a 2CD set in 1987, which includes the Bruckner 7th 1976 recording; and now again (2004). I only hope that this new release has sound truer to the 1973 Vinyl which was spectacular. The 87 release was subject to a process called "original image bit processing" that resulted in a sound that was too shill and harsh.

If anyone knows of a better Bruckner 4 recording for sound, quality of performance, and excitement of interpretation, let me know! I doubt one exists!"
