CD ReviewsBuck-Tick Just Plain RAWKS sakurai_girl | Seattle, WA (USA) | 12/01/1999 (5 out of 5 stars) "This band never dissapoints. Having been around for more than a decade they continue to expereiment with new sounds and come up with brilliant work. You don't have to understand Japanese to appreciate them. I hardly know any and they are my absolute favorite band (Japanese or otherwise). All five members are extremely talented... vocalist Atsushi Sakurai's voice is the type to send shivers down one's spine... he is my ideal rock star. This is a good collection to start with if you're new to B-T, it shows their range of styles from the late 80's to the mid 90's (they switched to another record label in the later 90's... so their newest works are not included). B-T's earlier influences were mostly British goth (The Cure, Bauhaus, Siouxsie & The Banshees, This Mortal Coil, etc.), they also have experiemented with industrial sounds... but I just think they're a great ROCK band. If this doesn't get you wanting more Buck-Tick... nothing will." Sakurai wa maji de kakkoi desu yo! Maria | Hong Kong | 12/03/1999 (5 out of 5 stars) "boku wa, Sakurai-chan ga daisuki desu yo! kono CD wa, B-T no "best collections" desu ne. "Dress" ga daisuki! Sakurai's voice is so wonderful... I also like their new work, especially the really coma-like, floating feel that "Gessekai" gives you. BT no atarashii single wa "Miu". "Miu" wa, honto ni subarashii desu yo! Sakurai's voice just gets better and better! With this double CD you can hear how their sound has changed through the years. (and you get a thick photo booklet ~ Sakurai with pink hair, haha!) buy this one!" BAKUCHIKU to BUCK-TICK and beyond. felmicco | Ventura, CA | 05/19/2001 (5 out of 5 stars) "From a seasoned BUCK-TICK fan of nearly a decade, I can tell you this CD set is one of the best overviews of a band someone could look for. Cataloguing from a demotape release of ROMANESQUE in 1986 to COSMOS, Ash-ra, and CANDY of 1996, this two disc collection contains an overview of every single BUCK-TICK released while on VICTOR/INVITATION and some album tracks as well. The C/W (b-side) tracks are often included along with the single, but I'm getting ahead of myself. First the CD begins with SEXUAL XXXXX!, an old song from 1987. Although ...IN HEAVEN... appears on the CD, I was rather disappointed no other tracks from SEVENTH HEAVEN (especially CASTLE IN THE AIR and DESPERATE GIRL) appeared.Track number eight, Aku no Hana, was their 1990 single and one of the best songs on this collection. The title comes from Charles Baudelaire's Les Fleurs du Mal, and is a testimony to angst and depression. Also, its C/W UNDER THE MOONLIGHT and a track from the Aku no Hana album, LOVE ME, appear. SUPIIDO and its C/W NARUSHISU appear next, the former being a quite enjoyable track. Taiyou ni Korosareta, a track from the 1991 album Kurutta Taiyou, is partially a requiem for Sakurai-sama's mother. (Sakura and JUPITER, later on the disc, also serve this purpose.) M-A-D is a speedy song that's addicting as all get-out, too. On the second disc, material from 1993 begins appearing. DORESU and die, the two 1993 singles, are exellcent. So are DORESU's C/W, Roku Gatsu no Okinawa (Okinawa in June) and the KIRAMEKI no Naka de... track from the CD. D-T-D was the secret track on the Darker Than Darkness -Style'93- album that caused a lot of problems because people thought their CDs were broken. Although I don't particularly like the next block of 1995 songs, Uta, Kimi e (C/W Uta), Itoshi no ROKKU STAA, and Mienai Mono wo Miyou to Suru Gokai Subete Gokai da aren't bad. Then come CANDY, CHOCOLATE, Ash-ra, and COSMOS. I was kind of disappointed that Tight Rope and MARIA didn't appear with the COSMOS tracks, but overall it's a pretty good overview of BT's sound. You can hear Sakurai-sama's vocal quality (or lack thereof.. forgive me ^^;;) in the earlier tracks, and slowly hear it begin to mature and change throughout the discs. You can also hear Imai's changing guitar styles and Hide's experimentations in songs like DORESU. I would not, by any standard, call this the "definitive BT collection" since it does not feature songs they did on Mercury/Polygram such as Gessekai (1998) and MIU (1999) that cannot be forgotten in any way.I also didn't like the large focus on singles and singles alone, with one or two album tracks thrown here and there. This CD sort of supplemented the CD called BT CATALOGUE released by VICTOR/INVITATION which was a CD of a-sides from JUST ONE MORE KISS through Mienai Mono wo Miyou to Suru Gokai Subete Gokai da (it was released before CANDY came out and then after that BT left the label). As a result, most of their better-known songs are showcased on the discs, sometimes in favour of some of the ones that would have been better choices. For example, I think instead of TO SEARCH and ICONOCLASM (I'd even like to throw out JUST ONE MORE KISS in favour of more 1988 songs, but...) I would've placed CASTLE IN THE AIR and possibly DESPERATE GIRL or even SEVENTH HEAVEN on there. But you can't argue with the companies, ne. Also, I would have not placed NARUSHISU on there, but rather I would have put MACHINE or MY FUNNY VALENTINE on there instead. This set is a decent introduction to BT, as it covers many bases of their sound.. But I'm not exactly happy with the tracks leading up to Aku no Hana, and I would have liked to see a little more focus on their 1988 material. However, I do feel it is good enough to warrant a five star rating, so that's what I gave it. Thank you for taking the time to read my review.- Akemi (Sakurai no Miko)."
