"I've owned "Bud Powell: The Complete Blue Note and Roost Recordings" for going on twenty years, but only recently have I began to explore his recordings on Verve. After picking up "Jazz Giant," I decided next to get this recent reissue in the Originals series -- "Blues in the Closet." First released in 1956, this trio recording features the legendary pianist accompanied by Ray Brown on bass and Osie Johnson on drums. They stroll through an even mix of standards then and now, for all these songs are part of today's jazz repertoire, including terrific accounts of Dizzy's "Woody N' You" and Bird's "Now's the Time." The sound is superb, unlike the aforementioned 1950 session, and Bud still has great command of his instrument, which is not always the case on those various 60s live albums. Jazz fans, have no fear of what's hiding in Bud's closet!"

"Everything Bud powell does is magic! If I could just play like this for one day in my life I would be happy."
