HOLLY'S UNDUBBED DEMOS

If this CD is the same as the 1983 vinyl release it contains:

1. Rock-A-Bye Rock

2. Maybe Baby

3. Because I Love You

4. I'm Gonna Set My Foot Right Down

5. Changin' All Those Changes

6. That's My Desire

7. Baby Won't You Come Out Tonight

8. It's Not My Fault

9. Brown Eyed Handsome Man

10. Bo Diddley

"Maybe Baby" is an early demo version that is quite different from the hit.

"That's My Desire" was recorded with and intended for the flip of "Rave On" but never used. Petty lightly overdubbed it with the Fireballs for the U.K. album "Remember Buddy Holly". It appeared undubbed for the first time here.

The remaining eight tracks are rockabilly demos Holly recorded in several Lubbock area recording studios in 1956. They were overdubbed by the Fireballs for the 1963 album "Reminiscing", and released undubbed for the first time here. (Several of these are now on the 2-CD "Buddy Holly Collection."

Crickets drummer Jerry Allison performed on all of these tracks, only to have his work largely obscured by overdubs. So here is a rare glimpse of how just Allison and Holly could pretty much carry the day as a two-man band.

My understanding of how this album came about is that producer Hoffman was in charge of "catalog" (recordings 7 years or older) at MCA. He was a big Holly fan and discovered the eight rockabilly demos in their vault. That previously unused Holly photo was in their file for the 1958 Coral album "Buddy Holly." This was still insufficient for an album so he negotiated with Petty, who contributed the undubbed `That's My Desire' take and `Maybe Baby' demo. Thus, everything about this album was truly "for the first time anywhere" -- in the USA. The `Maybe Baby' demo had been released in U.K. on 1972's "Remember Buddy Holly".

I enjoyed this album quite a bit in 1983 and recommend it for collectors. But suggest new Holly fans start with the Coral/Brunswick releases "Chirpin Crickets," "Buddy Holly," "Buddy Holly Story," or "Buddy Holly Collection".

"After buying all of the Buddy Holly albums which feature his pre and post-Crickets material, but overdubbed by musicians that didn't have anything to do with the original recordings, I thought that would be all I would get. But this CD proved me wrong. This CD has the un-overdubbed recordings - the orginals! If you buy this, you have a rare piece of music in your hands! Treat it carefully! Place your orders now! Everybody . . . okay, whatever."
