Bullmoose Jackson was one of the premier R&B artists in the 1940s-50s, known for his earthy vocals and big-toned tenor sax sound. He was an excellent sax player who played for many years with the Lucky Millinder band, replacing Lucky Thompson. He also began spotting Wynonie Harris, vocalist with Millinder, and before long was cutting records under his own name (often with Millinder sidemen) for the King/Queen label.
This CD is the first volume in the Chronological Classics complete works series dealing with Jackson. It includes 5 King/Queen sessions and one for Super Disc, all from 1945-47. His #1 chart hit I LOVE YOU, YES I DO is here as well as other early hits such as SNEAKY PETE, the raunchy WANT A BOWLEGGED WOMAN, and the answer song I KNOW WHO THREW THE WHISKEY IN THE WELL. Like Louis Jordan he often featured his tenor playing, as on the sides JAMMIN' AND JUMPIN' and MOOSE ON THE LOOSE. Although it wasn't a hit for him I love his version of HONEYDRIPPER from his very first session. Bullmoose Jackson was a monster performer during the heyday of the early R&B years. Check out his first recordings with this CD. It's terrific!"
