Great trios

"The first half of this CD features eight trios that Johnson recorded with Don Ewell and drums in 1946. Ewell plays excellent Jelly Roll Morton style piano throughout, and Johnson plays a firm lead and disciplined melodic variations. "In the Gloaming" and "Beautiful Doll" are superb. The second half is more mixed - a number of popular song based performances from the 1944/45 Johnson/robinson/Lewis sessions for American Music, some previously unreleased. They are not among the best tracks from these sessions but are still well worth hearing. The trios make this album a fine buy for anyone who enjoys Johnson."
