CD Reviews

In this case the BUZZCOCKS do it better.

"I love a great cover or tribute album. The essence of one is when the bands can either cover the original song in a way that offers a new take on the song or that covers it in a way that it's almost like an outtake by the original band, a good outtake.

There's the rare case when a cover is actually better than the original as in a CLASH tribute CD where a band does Death or Glory really well with gusto and upon hearing the original one can see its one of the few CLASH songs that's a bit flat.

There's no such song here. I'd say the BUZZCOCKS do every song better then these guys do here. Some are pretty good covers, DOSE especially I think captured the general BUZZCOCKS sound well. As with the CLASH when a band does like a punk or, actually, a sorta hardcore punk version of one of their songs its not all that good because the BUZZCOCKS (and the CLASH for that matter) aren't hardcore bands and the essence of their artistry sorta gets plowed away when done that way.

What this CD shows me is that I really like the BUZZCOCKS' vocalist's sound. No one really measures up to his distinct sound. The best covers here sound more faithful to the original although none of them are simply duplications of the originals.

I wouldn't rush out and buy this. I may never listen to this again actually. I think I'd explore more BUZZCOCKS albums rather than listen to particularly to this or make like a best of version of this using say 5 of the best songs as a sort of ep. chrisbct@hotmail.com"
