A worthwhile addition to any Viennese collection

"Solid, idiomatic performances. Viennese music is one of life's best natural cures for a grouchy mood. It defines "civilized."
I had earlier purchased all four Marco Polo volumes of Ziehrer's waltzes, marches, and polkas. This disk of operetta overtures came as a nice surprise, especially since these were all debut recordings.
Marco Polo/Naxos is one label that takes light music seriously. I started collecting the massive Johann Strauss edition in the early 1990s -- it was a chore and an expense but worth it. Now that both he and brother Josef are covered, there's a huge opportunity to explore some less-familiar Viennese music. The Ziehrer series is a terrific step in the right direction and I only hope we will see more."
