CD Reviews

The most disappointing CD I ever bought.
G. Dalton | Little Rock, AR | 06/01/2005
(1 out of 5 stars)

"No hyperbole there at all. I've often heard people complain about bands changing their sounds and "selling out" to try to increase their radio play. Most of the time those charges are ridiculous and the band is merely evolving. Well, I think if ever a band did "sell out," this is the one. I've never heard a follow-up CD sound more different from the previous one. While "Siren" fell more into the Toad the Wet Sprocket or Ocean Blue vein, on this one the band seems to be trying to give the music an edge that comes off as completely silly if you've ever heard "Siren." If you hadn't, then you might not notice much. It's like if REM suddenly decided they needed to sound much more like a mixture of blink-182, The Red Hot Chili Peppers, and Third Eye Blind. But less catchy. I saw these guys open for The Ocean Blue back in about '94 and kept waiting for their debut to show up at the record store. "Siren" was well worth the wait when it finally came out in '97. This latest album put me in a bad mood for a few days. This band is now defunct, so no one probably cares now anyhow. Lyrically -- "If you're happy, cool. If you try to be somebody else, you're a fool." Indeed."
Better than the Beatles....

"Well, they may not be better than the Beatles, yet, but Colony delivers an album that is absolutely infectious. This album is best described as alternative, but has the melodies and power-hooks that have Casey Casem written all over them. It is also refreshing to own an album that you can listen to all the way through. You won't have to press the skip button to jump around to your favorite tunes because Who I Wanted To Be has single-quality tracks layed from beginning to end. As a former A&R rep for Sony Music, I sure wish that I had discovered Colony. America, get ready for the new Colonial Era!"
