CD Reviews

Wounded Bird Records Takes a Good Chance...
S. Sarabia | Portland, ME, USA | 06/13/2009
(5 out of 5 stars)

"...and releases it on CD after 30 years after its first release on vinyl! This album is great! It features her monster hit, "When You Wake Up Tomorrow" and the second single, "I Ain't Got Nowhere to Go." The latter really wasn't as huge a follow-up to duplicate the success of "When You Wake Up," but nonetheless, this album picked up where the soft, sweet blockbuster predecessor, "House of Love" left off. "House of Love" featured the gigantic hit, "Victim" and a host of other lush, midtempo Disco/R&B nuggets from 1978. As to why Wounded Bird Records didn't combine the mere six songs "Chance" boasts with the songs of the eponymous follow-up, "Candi Staton" is puzzling. With technology where it is today, both albums could easily have filled up one CD (as a two-fer,) but hey...I'll take it just the way it is for memory's sake and for the sheer bliss of having it remastered. "Rock" or "Me and My Music" are what could have been choices for better second singles from "Chance," but this never happened. Also, for all the R&B vinyl collectors out there, a little trivia 4ya: The back side of the "When You Wake Up Tomorrow" 45 featured a gorgeous and bluesy little tune entitled, "Rough Times" which was written by Ashford & Simpson which more sadly, never made it on to the album. "Chance" is a long lost Disco/Soul classic that has lived to see the light of CD format! Buy it while you can b4 it disappears for another 30 years!"
