"This album gives you 6 swinging hardbop jazz numbers featuring saxophonists Cannonball Adderley and John Coltrane. Originally, this album was released as "The Cannonball Adderley Quintet in Chicago" in 1959. The current name appears to have been used later after Coltrane became more famous. On the other hand, Coltrane did pen two originals for the album. In reality, this was the Miles Davis band of the period without its leader. In any case, it provides a great opportunity to contrast the styles of these two renowned saxophonists side by side. The excellent liner notes provide commentary on their differences and the way Coltrane pushed Adderley on this album to be more adventuresome.



The album kicks off with "Limehouse Blues" which is followed by the old ballad "Stars Fell on Alabama" (made famous by trombonist/singer Jack Teagarden); Coltrane sits this one out. "Wabash" is a funky number by Adderley and is followed by Coltrane's fast-paced "Grand Central". Another ballad, "You're a Weaver of Dreams" gives Coltrane the spotlight. The album wraps up with Coltrane's second tune, "The Sleeper", which is another blues that finds the two horns chasing each other in the opening and closing sections.



Note that while Amazon lists this album as discontinued, this really just means that they are not able to sell it anymore. It is still available from BMG Music which is where I got it sometime within the past 1-2 years."

"This cd features two of the greatest legends of jazz. I cannot believe that it is out of print, while sub par recordings still are available in the stores. Buy it used if you get the opportunity!"
