Synopsis

Album Description
TONI TENNILLE AND DARYL DRAGON HAD THEIR FIRST HIT RECORD as "Captain & Tennille" in 1975 with the #1 smash (and Grammy Record of the Year) "Love Will Keep Us Together." Every year since then fans have asked them to record a Christmas album. Proving again that good things do indeed come to those who wait, Retroactive Entertainment is proud to announce the first studio album in more than 20 years from the duo Billboard magazine ranks among the top 10 of all time! Toni & Daryl had a wonderful time making this new Captain & Tennille holiday CD. It represents the many different styles of music the duo enjoys. "I think there's a holiday song here for just about everyone--adults and children alike." notes Toni. "I must confess that, as we were working on the music, I was thinking a lot about the children. I ought about how I would love to see them smile and laugh when they listen to `I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas." There are also some lovely songs that adults will particularly enjoy, such as the classic "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas" and other ballads. Toni Tennille wrote four original Christmas songs for the CD, including "Tahoe Snow," "Christmas in California," " The Christmas Star" and "Boogie Baby Christmas." Daryl Dragon offers up three instrumentals in the mix, all of which are quite fascinating--sometimes charming, sometimes outright funny, and sometimes, as in the case of "Daryl of the Bells," a musical trip through the mind of " the Captain!" So what is the secret of Christmas? The song that closes the album (written by the great American songwriters Sammy Cahn and Jimmy Van Heusen) discloses the secret with these lines: "So may I suggest the secret of Christmas is not the things you do at Christmas time, but the Christmas things you do all year through."

CD Reviews

Refreshing and fun

"This CD is a nice mix of music. The fun songs are the best (the Hippo song and Little St. Nick). I can't get over how imaginative the Captain is with his keyboards. On a couple of the songs you really do feel as though you're on a majic carpet ride through Daryl's imagination. I wish there were more truly talented people such as this in the music business."
The Most Wonderful Time of the Year...

"Remember when Christmas music was inspirational and fun? The last few years, so many Christmas albums, like Barbra Streisand's 2001 bore "Christmas Memories", are either too preachy or uninteresting.

But not this one! Admittedly, I've been a fan of the Captain and Tennille for nearly thirty years, but this album, from the first few seconds of track #1, brings a smile to my face and does what a Christmas album should do...relax and see the beauty and fun of the holidays. I especially enjoy seeing the looks on my kids' faces when they hear this CD...and I'm proud that my seven year old specifically asks for this CD now while doing her homework.

Thanks to Toni and Daryl for fulfilling their promise to make this album. It will certainly be a staple in our home."
Superb Christmas album!

"Captain & Tennille's first-ever Christmas CD is one that had a lot of thought put into it. It has songs that are sentimental, touching, funny, nostalgic, joyous -- and even downright outrageous! Daryl "Captain" Dragon still has the chops, and then some, to create great things on the keyboard, and on the production overall. He is a terrific musician and arranger. Toni Tennille still has that MAGICAL voice. Some people still think all she can do is "Love Will Keep Us Together" and "Muskrat Love," but she has a wide range and versatility that has kept through the years, and is distinct from any other singer today. And this shows the most on what I feel is the most outstanding song on the album, which is "The Secret Of Christmas," the title track. You'll definitely be moved! Another great track was taken from their 1976 variety series, a Christmas episode, where Toni sings "Little Saint Nick" with her sisters, and there are three instrumental tracks by the Captain, which are FUN!"
