"*Lucky* for me, I live not too far from Wolverhampton, in which Carina grew up, and so hearing of new talent being so local was a not-too-unusual thing. I took a chance and bought the album soon after being released and was blown away. Carina's vocals are beautiful, yet so raw and full of emotion. The sexually-charged opening track 'Message To Apollo' twists and twirls in a sense that the song morphs, changing throughout the 5-6 minute running time, from being rhythmic, fluid, melodic, to in parts, an equally fantastic raw, rhythmic repetition of 'Fine, you're divine....' beating itself into your brain. Every repetition increases in its fantastic-ness as it builds up, and then it swiftly changes back to the wonderful more melodious part...and something more.This is the first time I've written a review and I'm tired, so forgive me...I simply cannot articulate satisfactorily right now, especially in trying to convince you to buy this CD. All I can say is BUY IT! It is an essential addition to your CD collection. Other songs such as the bitter 'Let It Fall' and 'Ribbons' tug at your heart, not in the weepy sense, this grrl isn't about the weepy-weepy, but raw, affecting, invigorating emotion, sometimes found in just a whisper. However, some songs, such as the sumptious, sensuous 'On Leaving', and fragile acoustic 'The Waves', show the range of Carina's talents.I've been lucky to see Carina live and whilst her voice is even more affecting then, the record catches it wonderfully. Like her voice, the album has a bitter-sweet, melancholic, beautiful, raw, emotive mixture, rendered with much passion, maturity and integrity.
To try and describe Carina's 'style' some may use comparisons to other artists, and while such artists that she has been compared to I love and are amazing (for example PJ Harvey, as well as hints of early jazz leanings of Led Zepplin) and is of course a great compliment, may serve to deduct from the unique talent that is all her own - a distinctive style lyrically, vocally and musically. There be only one Miss. Round.Do yourself a favour and buy this album! "But it only has seven songs!" ...I hear you cry - my answer: Seven brilliant songs that must be heard and will leave you gagging for more.
