Its composer, Carlos Alberto Irigaray, was a teacher in the poor neighborhoods of Montevideo, and was a fervant defender of the Rio De La Plata's folklore. La Navidad Criolla debuted during the Christmas celebrations of 1966 in Montevideo, with a wide range of performers including adults, children's choirs, soloists, and instrumentalists. Its international popularity then swelled after numerous performances in Europe under the direction of Kurt Pahlen. It is now frequently performed during religious celebrations all around the world.
