Two CD set from Carmen, the highly unique '70s band who successfully fused Flamenco, Progressive and Rock into their sound. The Gypsies is their final album from 1976 while Widescreen is the first album in over 30 years for leader David Allen and a new Carmen. Angel Air. 2007.
"I haven't heard "Widescreen" so I can't comment but I'm glad to see "The Gypsies" is back in print. Like so many bands who go through the pressure of trying to crack the big time, start slowly fading and then decide to jettison the "commercial" appeal, Carmen actually produced a minor masterpiece here as they dropped the somewhat gimmicy fandango image of the first two albums and let loose with harder-edged songs, dominated by David Allen's searing solos and flamenco polyrhythms. It's a shame they weren't able to stay together because their fourth album, if it had ever come about, might have taken their sound into even more inventive directions. The title song alone is worth getting the CD for; an extended slow-builder erupting into a fiery guitar and castanet interplay. Highly recommended."
