"Neemi Jarvi breathes fire and life into one of the most vibrant and lively recordings of 'Carnival Overture'. The Scottish National Orchestra is virtually flawlwss and the sound is wondeful! One of the best recordings available for this piece. I have not listened to the Biblical Songs enough to give them a valid review, but I'm sure they are performed as well as the 'Carnival Overture'."

The BEST carnival overture

"This is BY FAR the most energetic recording of Carnival Overture on the market - energetic and virtually flawless. The only flaw occurs at the very end of the piece with the tambourine (I'm a percussionist so I noticed it) playing on the off-beats instead of the downbeats. Even with this mistake left in the recording, it's still far superior to anything else out there. The biblical songs are also very beautiful pieces - not performed/recorded often, and the orchestra here does them justice. A great record to own."

The simply splendid SNO does it again

"One wonders why the Scottish National Orchestra is not better known as one of the world's absolute best orchestras, because every recording I have ever heard by them is simply top-notch. Their recording of all of the Slavonic Dances (also with Jarvi) is as good a recording as one will find, as is the simply outstanding collection of the Sibelius tone poems (with Alexander Gibson as the conductor).



Echoing the over the reviewers, this is as good a recording of the Carnival Overture as I have ever heard! The performance has all of the vigor the listener could possibly want. Even the Symphonic Variations, one of my least favorite Dvorak compositions, is given a good reading here, although I often simply skip past it when listening to this disc. The lesser known pieces on the disc are the Slavonic Rhapsody Opus 45 #3 and the 10 Biblical Songs (the reason I bought this disc in the first place). Jarvi & the SNO give performances that make one wonder why these pieces are not heard more often.



All in all, this is a terrific Dvorak collection that clocks in at about 67 minutes, which is OK for the price of the CD. It makes one want to go out and find all the recordings of the SNO that are available. One could certainly do worse!"
