CD Reviews

The most sincere sinatra tribute, before he died...
sinatraphile1 | 05/03/2004
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Dozens of singers have come out with "tributes" after Sinatra's passing, however a select few had the balls to record thier tributes while Sinatra was around to listen and maybe critisize. Beegie Adair, tony Bennett and Carol slaone were among those bright people who paid tribute while Sinatra was still around to appreciate it, and not capitalizing on his death. That having been said, thsi is not your typical run of the mill Siantra tribute, why is it that everytime somone sings Sinatra they feel they need the "Nelson Riddle" sound. Sloane takes Sinatra trademark songs and gives them difinitive treatment by bending the notes, reshaping the songs and subtle improviations, and really really sings with the knowledge of feeling the songs meaning. She also has fresh jazz arrangements with mighty fine soloists, you will not recognize taht these are Sinatra standards, because Sloane turns them into her own, and interpets them as a gifted jazz artist, and Sinatra probably appreciated that. A great cd!"

"Cabaret diva Carol Sloane pays homage to Sinatra and in this well-selected, well-accompanied CD that features superb Sinatra fare. Her mellowy, rich vocals add lustre to these classics. It's a first-rate recording."
A Terrific Tribute From An Excellent Songstress With A....

(5 out of 5 stars)

"sound of her own! Two really cool things about this cd is that the tribute was made two years before Sinatra's death (already mentioned in previous reviews) and that Ms Sloane provides us with fresh interpretations of the material instead of trying to emulate Sinatra's style. A hand must be given to Bill Charlap, Scott Robinson, Michael Abene and Frank Wess who did the arrangements for this set. There are two duet tracks (with Bill Charlap), five quartet selections and six with the backing of a nonet........all with top drawer musicians with the soloists being Bill Charlap on the piano, Greg Gisbert on trumpet, Frank Wess on both tenor sax and flute, Scott Robinson on both bass and baritone saxes, and Steve Turre on trombone.

I love all the material, which I'm sure is familiar to everyone, but especially "I'll Be Around", "The Night We Called It A Day", "You Go To My Head", "I Fall In Love Too Easily", and "Young At Heart". These are ballads with which all her years of experience as a singer seem to come to the fore. There's not many who can make a ballad as sensuous the way she can....I submit as an example "I'll Be Around" or "You Go To My Head". This is one romantic lady!!

This cd is a winner in all categories!"
