"This record is killer! Carpathian Forest have the whole rock and roll/ Black Metal sound down! They totally wipe the floor with bands like Darkthrone, Burzum etc..... because they can actually play their instruments! Carpathian Forest capture all the vibe and dark atmosphere but they do it with ferocious power and unlike some of the other bands in this genre......they're really trying to push the envelope! There is one other thing that really comes through on this record too.....their sense of humor! I don't know about you but I'm really sick of all these "too serious" black metal records that have been coming out lately.......I think Satan is laughing so hard that the walls of Hell are about to crumble! When you look at it like that.........this record becomes way more scary"

Good compilation of live tracks and covers.

"We're Going to Hell for This has some live stuff, a few covers, and some re-recorded songs and demos like the `96 demo of "Death Triumphant." The album version sounded better, but this is still great and it's interesting to hear the different versions. Likewise the live versions are always a lot of fun, or it might just be my love of everything this band has ever done and a desire to hear as many versions of each song as possible. The one exception is "Doomed to Walk the Earth as Slaves of the Living Dead." Despite the song title, I just don't like the goofy call and response part, but I do like this live version better than the album version.



But the real standout tracks here, the real reason to buy this, is for the cover songs. The live stuff is nice but I could imagine living without hearing it. I love the cover of Venom's "In League with Satan." It's one of the few Venom songs I occasionally go back and listen to, I have mixed feelings about Venom, but it's a fun song and this version is really excellent. Normally I might b*tch about it because it appears to almost follow the formula of if you make the song slower and more plodding, it automatically sounds heavier. This may be true in many cases, but this is not formulaic; this is just pure excellence. It's true that it's a bit slower and more chugging in parts, but it works. This is how the song should've sounded to begin with. I was sort of unsure of the weird shrieking in the background for the "Look out! Beware!" part, but I got over it. The guitars sound better, the weird noises and stuff in the beginning and end work well, Nattefrost is more convincingly evil-sounding than Cronos, and I could just listen to this on repeat all day long and never tire of it. In fact, it is worth buying the CD just for this one song.



There is also a cover of Darkthrone's "In the Shadow of the Horns" and Discharge's "Possibilities of Life's Destruction," which are also quite good, but it's all overshadowed by the Venom cover. Overall, a very nice compilation album and entertaining packaging as well. As with most compilations, probably only of interest to people who already like the band, but if you do, this is pretty excellent."
