"Mainly lesser known gospel work, though several Carter classics were recorded at these sessions, including "I Never Will Marry" (beautifully redone by Linda Ronstadt in the early '70s with Dolly Parton on harmony), the lovely "On The Sea Of Galilee", a superb version of "I Wouldn't Mind Dying" and, of course, "Church In The Wildwood" ( Many years ago, my non-church going, though music-loving father, would, from time to time, without explanation, close his eyes and unleash a low, rumbling, horrifyingly off-key "Oh, come, come, come, come..."- much to the amazed consternation of his young hippie son. I know now where those strange noises derived from. Thanks a lot, A.P.). By this point in their recording career, A.P. was delving more and more into old Negro gospel and blues, which would also place him as one of the pioneers of ... rock and roll? A version of "Broken-Hearted Lover" was immaculately covered by the Cox Family a few years ago, more proof that Rounder should keep this material in print indefinately."
