CD ReviewsEllingtonian Combos Nikica Gilic | Zagreb, Croatia | 07/05/2006 (5 out of 5 stars) "This intriguing edition from "EMI Music France" series "Americans swinging in Paris" is actually called "Cat Anderson - The Ellingtonian".
Anderson leads several combos on this CD; the trombonists are Quentin Jackson (songs 8-12) and George "Buster" Cooper (songs 1-5 and 7), Russell Procope plays clarinet and alto sax (songs 1-5 and 7-12), Paul Gonsalves plays tenor (1-5, 7). While rhythm section changes pianists and bass players (some of which are really fine French musicians), the ellingtonian Sam Woodyard plays drums on all selections. The songs are recorded in 1958 and 1964 and, as you may get some idea on amazon's samples, mainly consist of good old fashion swing, with hints of dixieland and a touch of modern jazz (Paul Gonsalves). The music is consistently excellent and proves that Anderson was not merely a high-note specialist, but a complete artist, capable to perform in several styles and registers on his trumpet. However, extreme fans of Ellington's orchestra might find the combo format insufficiently rich for their full satisfaction." |
