Joyride for Pop Lovers
Robert Schell | Townsville, Texas | 05/16/2005
(5 out of 5 stars)

"Wow! This is one great guitar-driven Power Pop album, from this now apparently forgotten Boston-based group. I bought this album when it came out in 1990, and it has lost none of its excitement from repeated listenings over the years. I think all three of the members sang lead at various times, and they all had high-pitched John Lennon-esque voices. Nearly every song here is a gem, but the best are the driving "Tayter County" the psychedelic-tinged "Proud Land" and the plaintive ballad "Right on the nail.""

"The harmonies and melodies are near perfect. This is a gem of a collection of stellar songs. Any band who wishes to call themselves "performers of intelligent pop music with an edge" need to study this album. I agree that The Who and The Beatles are obvious mentors of the Cavedogs, but there is indeed an added dimension here that validates the "shoulders of giants" adage. You don't know your pop history if you don't own this record. And, yes, there is a perfect song on this near perfect album. It's called "Taking Up Space." If you can learn, and then imitate, the intricacies of writing and performing this song, then you've got it made."

"This album goes on my short list of favorite albums. These guys had it all: great chops, great songs, great chemistry. They all wrote songs, all sang lead and just tore it up live. The obvious touchstones are the Who and Beatles but the Cavedogs have their own sound. Too much power for powerpop, too much pop for grunge, they just fell through the cracks in the early 90's.Guitarist Todd Spahr went on to put out a couple of great albums fronting "The Gravy". Bassist Brian Steven's solo album "Prettier Than You" is a great piece of psychadelic pop, and drummer Mark Rivers went on to put out a terrific album with future Francine frontman Clayton Scoble under the name "Poundcake". Go to the Qdivision website if you'd like to track them down. But this is where it all started, and if you like hard, loud rock'n'roll with killer hooks and great vocal harmonies, look no further."
