CD ReviewsSmokin' hard-bop from an original master J. Levinson | Media, PA USA | 11/17/2003 (5 out of 5 stars) "Baritone saxophonist Cecil Payne was still smokin' at 72 in 1993 when this studio set was recorded. He's joined by a pair of jazz veterans, pianist Harold Mabern and bassist John Ore, along with younger talents Eric Alexander on tenor sax and Joe Farnsworth on drums. Most of the tracks are lengthy jams that allow the players plenty of solo space. Besides Payne, Mabern and Alexander provide most of the solo pyrotechnics. Trumpeter Freddie Hubbard guests for a solo on "Be Wee". Payne breaks out his flute on "Bosco" and the title track, named for his wife, C. Ruth Payne. This is perhaps his best recording available on CD, highly recommended to hard-bop fans." Still burnin' with the best!!! J. Levinson | 06/26/1998 (5 out of 5 stars) "A CD where a love for the bebop style is evident in the masterful hands of one of its original voices, Cecil Payne."
