"At an age when most mezzos are doing local theatre, studying, and dreaming of perhaps one day doing Tancredi or La Cenerentola, 22-year-old Cecilia Bartoli recorded this collection and, in doing so, served notice that for the forseeable future, one could not mention late 20th-century mezzo-sopranos without including her name near the very top of the list. This is no mere album of pretty songs done by a competent singer but some of the most beautifully and skillfully-rendered Rossini in recent memory. Not since Jackie Horne in her prime have some of these songs received such engaging treatment. And, some, like "Cruda sorte! Amor tiranno" from "La Italiana in Algeri", are now Cecilia's, alone. Here's a tip; leave the incredulity at her tender age behind and just listen. You'll be treated to some of the finest Rossini you're ever likely to hear."
Cecilia is a wonderful singer!

"This album recorded 1989. She is 23-year-old in those time, but she sung well these Rossini's Aria. I think she will be wonderful singer in the 21st Century. She has a wonderful voice and techinique. Some people says she is not good compared with the singers in the good old days. But I don't mind the things they said. They must envy her sucess. I recommend it highly!"
Pure Fun!

"You can't criticize a perfect blend. Of course everyone knows about Bartoli's weaknesses, BUT her voice was made to sing the lively & lilting, tuneful & titillating music of dear Rossini. This album is pure fun! Don't analyze it, just let yourself lift off! Ciao!"
Wonderful!

"Back in the days when the classical all-night program was one man who said and played anything he wanted to (I remember a rant on the poor quality of a pair of name brand corduroy pants, for instance), one night he just about roared, "you've got to listen to this!" and the the "Cruda Sorte" from this album filled my room.
He was right.
Next day I went out and tried to buy it. Didn't seem to be in the stores yet. But by the time I got it and listened to it a few times, I was convinced that this was one of the best albums in my large and extremely varied collection.
Things like that were why I listened to him. That and the fact that I had severe asthma at the time and didn't like to listen to myself breathe.
